I discussed my master’s thesis at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Al-Qadisiyah University tagged (The effect of exposure of pre-pubertal male rats to aflatoxin B1 on their reproductive efficiency after puberty)

By the student (Hussein Hamid Abdel-Hajami), under the supervision of Professor Dr. Jabbar Abbas Ahmed Al-Saadi

The thesis aims to: document the harmful effects that exposure of male rats to aflatoxin B1 in the prepubertal stage can have on the efficiency of the reproductive system after puberty.

The message showed: a decrease in the concentration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone in the blood serum, and the expression level of the GNRHR1, FSHβ, and LHβ genes in the pituitary gland, and the LHR, FSHR, ABP, 3β-HSD, and 17β-HSD genes in the testes, and at all stages of the study. Histological sections of the testes of treated males showed atrophy of some seminiferous tubules and emptying of their cavities, with the presence of gaps and desquamation of germ cells. Histological sections of the epididymis showed the absence of cavities, degeneration of the epithelial layer, distortion of some cavities, and thickening of the lining compared to control sections. The motility, number, and vitality of sperm also decreased significantly, and sperm abnormalities increased significantly in the treatment group compared to the control. Females mated with treatment males showed a significant decrease in the pregnancy rate, number of births per mother, duration of pregnancy, and newborn weight on the day of birth compared to females mated with control males.

The thesis concluded: Exposure to aflatoxin in the pre-puberty stage has a harmful effect on male reproduction, represented by a decrease in reproductive efficiency and performance with a defect in sperm production after puberty.

The message recommended: Paying attention to eating healthy food free of aflatoxins produced by mold to avoid possible damage to the reproductive system.
